8 ways of recognizing depression, a psychiatrist perspective

As a psychiatrist, I often see patients struggling with depression who don’t realize they are dealing with more than just feeling “down.” Depression can be difficult to recognize, but being aware of the signs is the first step in getting effective treatment. Here are 8 common ways of recognizing if you or a loved one may be experiencing clinical depression:
1. Persistent Sadness
If feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, or sadness persist for more than two weeks, this could signify depression. These emotions are present most of the day, every day, and often seem to come from nowhere.
2. Loss of Interest
When activities and hobbies that used to bring joy no longer do, this loss of interest is a potential symptom. Depressed individuals may feel detached and numb even around fun activities.
3. Changes in Appetite
Appetite often changes with depression. Some individuals experience overeating and weight gain, while others have a loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss.
