Navigating the Storm: Strategies for Countering Malignant Narcissism in Political Campaigns
By Lauro Amezcua-Patino, MD, FAPA.
In the theater of politics, the emergence of a candidate displaying traits of malignant narcissism presents a unique and formidable challenge. Such individuals may possess a charismatic allure, alongside tendencies toward grandiosity, a need for admiration, and a notable lack of empathy.
When such a candidate enters the race for office, how should one proceed? Here, we offer strategies for both candidates and voters to engage effectively and preserve the integrity of the democratic process.
First, it is crucial to understand what sets a malignant narcissist apart. This is a person who, beyond typical narcissistic traits, may exhibit behaviors indicative of antisocial personality disorder, such as deceitfulness, manipulation, and a disregard for the rights of others.
“The narcissist does not have any leadership qualities. He thinks about himself excessively often, not about the public interest, not about the collective. And they always overestimate themselves. That’s what Trump is doing too: overestimating himself.”
Recognizing these traits can inform a strategy that neither underestimates nor over-engages with the provocations that may arise.
