Observations on President Biden: Initiating a Dialogue on Potential Neurological Concerns
by Lauro Amezcua-Patino, MD, FAPA
As a seasoned psychiatrist with knowledge of neuropsychiatric disorders, including the psychiatric and cognitive complications associated with neurological diseases like Parkinson’s, I have encountered numerous cases throughout my career.
While I cannot personally assess President Joe Biden and am not qualified to do so, my professional observations over the past four years have led me to take note of several symptoms that may indicate the presence of Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions.
These symptoms include a rigid, emotionless facial expression, slightly leaning forward stance, a slow and shuffling gait, and subtle tremors. While an official diagnosis can only be made through a proper neurological evaluation by a qualified specialist, it is difficult for any physician not to recognize such clear abnormal behaviors and symptoms.
My intention in writing this article is not to make a diagnosis but rather to bring attention to this matter and encourage discussion within the medical community. It is crucial that we as healthcare professionals openly address and thoroughly examine the health of those in high positions of power in our nation, as their well-being can greatly impact national and global stability.
When observing symptoms such as a mask-like facial expression, forward-tilted posture, shuffling gait, and mild tremors, there are several potential diagnoses that must be considered. These include normal aging, which can manifest as general slowing of movements and slight changes in posture without significant tremors or gait abnormalities. Parkinson’s disease, characterized by motor symptoms like bradykinesia (slow movement), rigidity, and resting tremors, should also be taken into account.
Other rare possibilities may include Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, which presents with early postural instability and vertical gaze palsy; Multiple System Atrophy, marked by autonomic dysfunction and cerebellar symptoms; Vascular Parkinsonism, resulting from strokes affecting the basal ganglia. Each of these conditions requires a thorough evaluation for an accurate diagnosis and differentiation from other potential causes.
Looking back at history, I am reminded of former President Ronald Reagan, who began showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease while in office and was eventually diagnosed with severe dementia. The gradual onset of cognitive decline in Reagan’s case highlights the importance of early recognition and intervention in neurological disorders. Similar to Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s is a progressive condition, and its initial symptoms can be subtle and easily overlooked.
The potential impact of neurological disorders on high-ranking officials cannot be underestimated. Cognitive and motor impairments can greatly affect decision-making abilities, communication skills, and overall leadership capabilities. It is therefore crucial for the medical community to advocate for transparency and comprehensive health evaluations of our leaders. This is not a matter of political bias, but rather a concern for the well-being of our nation and the effective functioning of its government.
In the tumultuous year of 2020, I decided to extend my financial support to President Biden. My motivation stemmed from a deep-rooted desire for strong and competent leadership to guide our country towards stability and progress. These observations are not driven by political bias but rather by a sense of professional responsibility and concern.
As physicians, it is our duty to recognize and address health issues, even when they involve individuals in the highest echelons of power. I implore my colleagues in the medical community to join in this crucial dialogue. Let us come together to discuss the importance of regular health evaluations for our leaders and consider the potential impact of neurological conditions on their ability to effectively serve our nation.
In conclusion, while I do not have the authority to diagnose President Biden, my observations bring forth important questions that require further examination. As physicians, it is our responsibility to advocate for the health and well-being of our leaders, as their physical and mental wellness directly influence the direction and stability of our nation.
