In recent years, there has been a concerning trend emerging in the United States — the growing acceptance of authoritarianism. This is a particularly distressing trend not only because we are a democracy, but because many who prior to lauded that fact are not ready to toss it for something that we as a country have always stood against — the concentration of power in one sole individual.

The United States, once a beacon of democracy and individual freedom, is witnessing a shift towards embracing leaders and policies that prioritize power and control over democratic principles. This phenomenon stems from various societal, political, and economic factors. It was Benjamin Franklin who once said, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

One of the primary drivers behind the acceptance of authoritarianism is fear and insecurity. In an increasingly complex and uncertain world, people often seek strong leadership and decisive action to navigate challenges and maintain stability.
